Most business meetings are a waste of time

ROOT

Most work meetings and presentations are uninspiring, unproductive and a waste of time, according to research revealed by Sharp Europa. The company commissioned a study to find out if there were better ways for people to collaborate and share ideas.

Key data

86% of workers spend five hours a week in meetings.

79% say they are more productive at their desks.

Only 42% of workers believe that their meetings are ‘collaborative’; 58% say meetings would be better if everyone was more able to get involved.

34% say the spend 25-50% of the time during a presentation thinking about something else.

9% of workers admitted to falling asleep during a work presentation and 34% have witnessed someone else nodding off.

Additional facts

  • Many meetings are not set up in a way that allows everyone to take part and usually one person talks too much.

  • Reasons for disliking presentations included talks being too long, boring presenters, uninspiring content and not enough opportunities to ask questions.

  • Presentation training, better time management and better tools for supporting content delivery could help improve meetings and presentations.

The study surveyed workers in the UK, Spain, Sweden, Germany, France and the Netherlands, and was commissioned by Sharp Europe to help launch its new meeting technology. You can find more information here.
