THE TIME COMETH
With Drupa almost upon us it’s time to get that ‘must-see’ list all but drawn up.

Drupa exhibitors tend to keep launches up their sleeves as long as possible to they don’t jeopardise pre-show sales but, with everyone nudging their elbow for information, details are emerging. Here we’ve highlighted some of the more interesting/innovative new solutions worth putting on your ‘must see’ list.

.

Canon
Hall 8a, stand B46
Showcasing will be products to extend the ever-expanding imagePress digital printer range. Building on the imagePress C1, comes a colour device with clear toner for the light production market, and see the new imagePress C6000 and imagePress C6000VP with powerful workflow control and in-line finishing. The 6000 delivers 1,200dpi with 256 graduations at rated speed of 60 colour impressions-per-minute onto paper stocks up to 135gsm (with the ability to print on stocks up to 300gsm). The C6000VP 60 colour impressions-per-minute onto paper stocks up to 300gsm

Also on show will be the new range of imagePress monochrome engines which have been developed for the commercial print, CRD, transactional and print-for-pay sectors.

A new strategic alliance with Agfa Graphics means Canon’s imagePress range of digital presses will be capable of full integration with Agfa’s new Apogee Suite - a JDF workflow solution. Also scheduled for release at Drupa is version 2.0 of the i1 Process Control system developed for Canon by X-Rite for imagePress users. In addition to an enhanced graphical user interface, is a new interactive profiling function created to optimise output profiles and improve accuracy.

Also worth noting is a software suite called Helix Production Workflow for print management and production. Developed by NT-ware but distributed exclusively by Canon, this has been designed specifically for CRDs, print-for-pay, creative services and the commercial print market.

As for LFPs, expect to see the addition of the imagePrograf iPF720 with its 80GB hard disk drive.

Duplo
Hall 13, stand B53
Launching is the mid-range bookletmaker DBM-350/T, which fits between Duplo’s low-end DBM-120/T and high-end DBM-500/T, and has speeds of up to 3,000 books an hour. The machine, which has fully automated set-up, can accommodate a range of output from on-demand applications such as CD and DVD covers through to A4 and A3 booklets of up to 80 pages. Because it can handle set-by-set and sheet-by-sheet output the new machine can be connected to Duplo’s collating systems or dynamic sheet feeders - great for printers making the transition from offset to digital, allowing you to incorporate colour content and variable data.

For the first time, Duplo will also be exhibiting its DC-645 Production Colour Finisher with a new knife folder, as well as the intelligent DSF-5000 high-speed dynamic document sheet feeder. The latter can support the printed output of multiple printers and feed a variety of substrates with both ultrasonic double and optical double detection. It can feed up to 400 sheets per minute.

Also see how Duplo has extended its single clamp fully automatic DuBinder range by adding a PUR version for short- to medium-run perfect bound books printed digitally or on coated stocks.

ECRM
Hall 9, stand C56
On show will be the DPX 4 Eco, designed to cut the use of development chemicals by half. This will be shown alongside improved versions of the Mako 2x, 4x, and 8x platesetters with a more powerful 120milliwatt laser diode that will not only adapt to promised chemistry-free plate offerings, but future violet plate technologies as well.

Also expect to see chemistry-free digital plate Azura V for violet platesetters from Agfa. It will debut in technology demonstrations.

Pop WorkMates 3.0 on your list if you are wanting an entry-level digital prepress workflow solution. It has an entirely new graphic user interface (allowing you to view all or only selected workflows) and is compatible with Harlequin Rip 8.0. Users can choose to drop jobs into automatic flows for complete automation, or manual flows to create custom impositions to selected output devices.

 Heidelberg
Hall 1, stand A01
There’s nothing really new in terms of B2/3 presses from Heidelberg at this show (the Anicolor will still be the main attraction) but it will unveil its new Speedmaster SM 52 and SM 74 series (replacing the Printmaster PM and Speedmaster SM presses in 35 x 50 cm and 50 x 70 cm formats).

Note that from Drupa onwards Heidelberg will be equipping all its Speedmaster presses (all formats) with a new, standardised high-performance control station called the Prinect Press Center. This combines press operation with colour and register control in a single, central console. Particularly noteworthy are its Intellistart function and the wallscreen, a large screen integrated into the extraneous light screen to give press operators an overview of all press processes. Integrated in the Prinect Press Center is also a new version of the spectrophotometric colour measuring system Prinect Axis Control.

The company’s latest finishing offerings will include a new-look and more flexible Varimatrix 105 CS die-cutter for those of you seeking an entry-level solution, and new options for the Eurobind 4000 adhesive binder, including a criss-crossed delivery, a back-stripping station, a PUR spine nozzle and the new three-knife trimmer.

HP
Hall 8A, stand B26
HP is rolling out a raft of products for the digital print market, including the new HP Indigo 7000, W7200 and WS6000. Other highlights include the unveiling of wide-format printers using its Latex Printing Technologies for an environmentally-friendly alternative for outdoor and indoor print applications, and a high-speed 30in Inkjet Web Press for the high-volume production of direct mail and books etc. The company’s first-ever graphic arts workflow portfolio, the HP SmartStream Digital Workflow Portfolio, will also be demonstrated.

The Inkjet Web Press, which is expected to be commercially available in the second half of 2009, is capable of printing in full-colour on rolls up to 30in wide at 400ft per minute (122 m/min) and is compatible with a range of uncoated media.

With the new HP Latex Printing Technologies you get an alternative to traditional large-format printing methods. Water-based HP Latex Inks produce odourless prints on a range of HP and non-HP large-format media. Coupled with HP Thermal Inkjet Technology, HP Latex Inks additionally provide durable output, with outdoor prints achieving display permanence up to three years unlaminated. The first HP printers using HP Latex Printing Technologies are to be announced at the show.

KAMA (PIC A)
Hall 3, stand D31
On its debut as a Drupa exhibitor Kama will show a newly developed offline solution for print processing and finishing designed for the digital print market. The ProFold 74 folder/gluer can deal with intricate cross-folders, ticket pockets, mailing envelopes, CD cases etc. The tool mounting grid used in the machine means they can be rapidly positioned in any order so there are short set-up/changeover times.

KAS Paper Systems
Hall 13, stand B07
Launching is the KAS Mailwrap polywrapper which has been developed to fill a gap in the market for printers wanting to upgrade from lower speed equipment without having to invest in high speed polywrappers. It handles from CD width to over A4, with a maximum speed of 5000 packs per hour.

Also new is the Crease Matic Auto50, a SRA2 suction fed fully programmable card creaser that operates at up to 7000sph. The crease can be programmed anywhere along the length of the sheet and up to 28 creases per sheet can be programmed with 99 memories for regular jobs. It is supplied with four creasing width tools to cover the stock range of 80-350gsm.

Komori
Hall 15, stand D04
Under the banner ‘Five Solutions’ Komori will provide demonstrations in five theatres on: extra added-value; one-pass high productivity; on-demand changeover; flexible multi print; and preserving the environment. Central to the five demonstration theatres will be the ‘DoNet Zone’, the command centre for Komori's JDF workflow. JDF management of all Drupa presses, using three MIS vendors, will be networked through Komori's K-Station, which provides a bi-directional interface moving digital data throughout the entire production process. When used in conjunction with the software systems of our job management partners, information is sent from the press back through K-Station and delivers real-time press productivity and pressroom management data.

Show innovations include: KHS-AI advanced intelligence on sheet-fed presses for faster makeready and job changeover – the main feature in the on-demand changeover theatre.

Mitsubishi
Hall 15, stand D42
On show will be model variations never seen before of the sheet-fed Diamond V3000 Series presses introduced last September in Japan. The line-up includes a six-colour V3000LX with coater and extended delivery, an eight-colour V3000R convertible perfector and a ten-colour V3000TP Tandem Perfector. All three presses accommodate sheet sizes of up to 1,050mm x 750mm and print at a maximum speed of 16,200 sheets per hour.
