JDF READY MORGANA DOCUMASTER MAKES ITS DEBUT (12.05.08)

Drupa will see the debut of a JDF ready Morgana DocuMaster multi-functional bookletmaking and finishing system capable of handling variable data output.

Designed to provide near-line bookletmaking for printers producing pre-collated sets from digital print engines, the DocuMaster has been around since 2005. Because it creases sheets as part of the feeding and bookletmaking operation, it dispenses with the need for removing sheets that need creasing; creasing them and then re-collating the set. In addition to producing quality booklets – with a perfect bound appearance if required – the unit acts as a creaser for 4pp documents on heavier stocks and performs perforating as well.

Now, the JDF ready DocuMaster can also handle variable data material, sending and retrieving data via a web browser, ready to be integrated into a complete workflow and MIS package.

“Many of our customers have been asking about JDF readiness,” said Morgana managing director Quen Baum, “and with more and more variable data documents being produced this feature is now high on peoples’ list of requirements for new equipment.”

The DocuMaster uses a simple variable data camera to read a fixed point on either cover or inside page. This is all that is needed, irrespective of booklet size. There is no need to read from bar codes or data matrix dots so that the DocuMaster will work with any existing system without additional software. Instructions for the pages that need creasing, the required sheet size and finished trim size are given from a centrally controlled joystick before automatic operation takes over.

Morgana has added another refinement in the form of a sonic detector that checks every sheet before feeding and automatically stops operation in the event of a double feed.

The new DocuMaster is easier than ever to use, takes a maximum sheet size of 630mm x 330mm and a maximum weight in excess of 350gsm. Its programming facility allows 9 repeat jobs to be stored and instantly retrieved.
