Hello,
As we all know August is traditionally
the silly season. Everyone's away, the
sun is shining and there's nothing to
read about in the papers except some
young footballer cheating on his pop star
wife, or a group of pigs making a last
dash for freedom before they get turned
into sausages.
However whatever other sillyness
may be about, it can't quite cover the
serious issues that we are all faced with.
While we've reported numerous "best-ever" record sales, leads
and deals from Drupa, with on-floor sales estimated at over $15
billion, the price of oil at over $130 a barrel, the impact of which
is starting to seep into our everydayness, means that we go into
the autumn with a whole set of challenges. Running an even
tighter business, with our eyes firmly searching for new valueadded
opportunities has to be the new season focus for all of us.
For this issue, we've decided look at the world of ink and
examine the new chemistries and formulations that have
become available to our markets. Our technology editor Sophie
Matthews-Paul will bring you up to speed with all the latest
developments, to help you make informed choices about any
new directions you wish to take.
A friend of mine - Crystal Bob - a tie-dyed in the wool true
old hippy - has been victoriously claiming that the hippies had it
right all along, what with all that whole food and Gaia
consciousness malarkey. And you know he's right, none of us can
operate on the commercial stage now without giving conscious
thought to the environment. In this issue our business editor
Lesley Simpson looks at a refreshing new exhibitions company
that is on a mission to demonstrate that sustainability makes
good business sense. Not that we ever doubted it.
Melony Rocque-Hewitt
Executive Editor (and suspected hippy chick).

Eagle-eyed readers have noticed that, inadvertently, additional text found its way onto the end of Sophie Matthews-Paul's feature on ink that appeared on pages 24 - 29 in the August issue of Image Reports.
No, Sophie hadn't lost the plot, but our production team must have been having a bad hair day. We'd like to apologise for any confusion this might have caused. (Ed)
