IPEX, THE FOOTSLOGGERS GUIDE, PART 3
By Simon Eccles
Printers and posties permitting, this Image Reports should
be reaching you just days before the opening of IPEX, the biggest print
show in the galaxy this year. Doors open at 10:00 am on 4 April at the
NEC in Birmingham, and the party won’t stop swinging until 4:00
pm on the 11th. Remember too that Birmingham is not only the home of Dalek-inspired
architecture but it serves the best Indian food this side of Delhi.
This is the third and last of our IPEX previews. Next month
we’ll analyse what we learned from the show, who wore the loudest
ties, and the location of the best balti.
Last month we made a start on a list of significant stands
at the show, and due to the eccentricities of company names, found that
a strictly alphabetical list divided neatly in half after the letter E.
Since then we’ve received a lot more information from exhibitors,
so this second half contains some A-E companies too.

AGFA GRAPHICS
Hall 6 C10
Agfa is adopting inkjets as a strategic development to replace the
declining photographic coatings business.
The Dotrix 63cm reel-fed high speed UV inkjet has
been upgraded for modularity, such as the ability to fit a preprint
station with either an Anilox roller for overall white undercoats
or a flexo plate for pattern undercoats. In-line modules include
varnishing, diecutting and finishing. The Spice version of Dotrix,
which can be fitted to a conventional print line as an overprinter,
is being upgraded for greater reliability and will be shown as a
hybrid digitalflexo press at IPEX, based on a UK-built flexo line. |
A duplex Dotrix has been created for an unnamed UK transaction printer,
which has ordered four units for printing up to 500 A4 pages per
minute.
The long-awaited Mutoh-built Anapurna 64 and 100 UV
flatbed/roll hybrids have been delayed so Agfa has sourced a pair
of alternate models. These are being launched at IPEX as the 62
inch L (£99,000) and 100 inch XL (£124,000). They feature
a maximum resolution of 363 x 725 dpi and a white ink capability.
The M-Press hybrid flatbed screen press developed
with Thieme isn't shown on the stand, but Agfa expects the first
one to be operational by then, at SMP Group in Woolwich. The 62
x 102 inch flatbed printer is sold in two formats: standard (with
belt-driven feed table) for £990,000; and fully auto (with
autoloader) for £80,000 extra. One configuration has Thieme
5000XL screen units before and after the digital section.

FUJIFILM GRAPHIC SYSTEMS
Hall 9 B20
Fuji will introduce the first of a planned pair of processless metal litho
plates at Ipex. The Pro-T will start to ship in March or April and Fuji
claims run lengths of 100,000 impressions. It ‘develops’ on-press
so no processor or separate chemistry is needed. The second plate, the
violet-sensitive Pro-V for 200,000 runs, won’t be demonstrated.
It’s about a year from shipping, partly because it needs more powerful
lasers than the 60mW commonly available now.
New platesetters will also be introduced. The V8 is a flagship
B1 violet setter available in two forms: HD for high definition and HS
for high speed. A VLF (very large format) platesetter will also be on
the stand.

GMG
Hall 6 B20
German proofing developer GMG has branched into other areas of production
in the past couple of years. Its main proofing software is ColorProof,
with a halftone add-on called DotProof for high res inkjets. There’s
also FlexoProof, which supports flexo file formats and Pantone spot colours.
ColorServer is a new tool for automatic colour space conversions
(CMYK-to-CMYK, RGB-to-CMYK and RGB-to- RGB). InkOptimizer, for conventional
printing, automatically reduces chromatic colours, providing cost savings
by reducing ink usage.
W: www.gmgcolor.com
GRADUAL SOFTWARE
Hall 20 D45
Gradual Software was set up 18 months ago by some of the founders of Enfocus
in Belgium. It bought the Danish CaslonSoft’s Windows automation
program and relaunched it as CaslonFlow 4 at a radically lower price of
£1,400. At Ipex it is introducing the next generation, called SWITCH,
which runs on Mac OS X or Windows.
LightSWITCH is the £480 entry level, intended for
receiving and sorting incoming files via email or FTP. FullSWITCH at £1,725
is more flexible and lets users create design complete workflow automation
processes. It can also control several third party applications directly,
including Adobe CS2, Apago, callas, and Enfocus. These will be launched
at IPEX.
Further away is PowerSwitch (£3,450) which accepts
scripts to control the applications. It can also read metadata attached
to job files (such as JDF or other XML).
Gradual will be on the stand of its UK distributor Positive
Focus.
W: www.gradual.com

MIMAKI ENGINEERING
Hall 9 B35
Mimaki has a major wide format launch planned at IPEX where it shares
a stand with UK distributor Hybrid Services. The new JV5 roll-fed models
will fit above the popular JV3 in its range and offer speeds up to 40m2
per hour, a maximum resolution of 540 x 1,080dpi and a choice of ES3 eco
ink or a forthcoming HS solvent ink. The speed comes from a new wide stripe
head with four times as many nozzles as the JV3, fitted in a staggered
four headed configuration. There will be double sized ink cartridges
Two widths will be offered initially: the 130S (1.6m) and
160S (2.6m. A new version of the JV3 configured for direct flag and other
textile printing will be shown, using aqueous dispersal inks and said
to have very good show through (an advantage in this market). It’s
an alternative to dye sublimation printing and avoids the transfer stage.
W: www.hybridservices.com
MUTOH EUROPE
Hall 9 F40
Mutoh hasn’t announced what it will be showing but the new Rockhopper
3 is a reasonable guess. This 65 and 90 inch printer replaces the Rockhopper
II Eco-solvent Plus. It uses new ‘third generation’ Eco-Solvent
Ultra inks with a three year outdoor life. These are 20 per cent cheaper
yet are said to have better output quality and media compatibility as
well as better drying performance. An Ultra ink conversion kit is available
for earlier Rockhoppers. On the hardware side there’s a new winder/unwinder
and an opening left cover for easier maintenance. It runs at up to 13m2/hour
at 360dpi, though max res is 1,440 x 1,440dpi.
Mutoh is also jointly developing the flatbed/roll hybrid
UV printer that Agfa will sell as the Anapurna. Mutoh calls it Cobra 100uv.

runs.
W: www.nipson.com
OCÉ
Hall 1 G50
Océ at IPEX will provide the digital printing side of the big multi-vendor
PrintCity collaboration in Hall 1. The company’s pre-show ads are
making teasing references to a ‘quantum leap’ digital printing
launch for transactional commercial and book printing.
Other new products will include the Océ VarioStream
9230 for spot colour printing, up to 3/3, comprising black plus two more
‘CustomTones’ on both sides of the web. Océ says this
is the only digital printing system able to print 3/3, 2/2 and 1/1 interchangeably.
Also on show will be the cut-sheet VarioPrint 2110 and 5000
Advanced, CPS900 (cut sheet digital colour press), reel-fed VarioStream

of inkjet print heads, Gerber, Grapo, Domino, Riso, New System, Zi-pher
and Zünd, plus the approved integrators Xennia, iTi and Impika.
Last year Xaar announced its hybrid sideshooter (HSS) technology,
which will be demonstrated for the first time in a working printer at
IPEX. The HSS platform combines advanced piezo drop on demand technology
with Xaar’s ‘through-flow’ design.
The new platform will be shown in ‘an innovative high
speed, single pass machine,’ printing on a range of substrates.
Systems integrators iTi and Xennia will demonstrate how Xaar’s multi-pulse,
greyscale (variable drop size) OmniDot platform is helping them to deliver
photographic quality images. iTi is showing it on its Digital Web Press
for labels and flexible materials, while Xenia will show it with its high
throughput XenJet 4000 industrial printer.
W: www.xaar.com
XEIKON
Hall 4 C40
Digital colour press pioneer Xeikon’s message for Ipex is straight
out of those self-motivation books: Dream. Dare. Do. Applications demonstrated
will include on-demand book printing, labels, transaction printing and
direct marketing. It will also demonstrate a new heat seal textile transfer
solution that Xeikon claims will outperform direct screen print or litho
transfers.
It’s not saying much about new equipment but the high
quality 5000 digital press will be shown with the book finishing line.
Recent Xeikon announcements include Print Protect, which prevents scuffs
and scratches in mailing systems, and an in-line mailing system developed
by Kern.
W: www.xeikon.be
XEROX
Hall 3a
Xerox reckons that it has the largest stand at Ipex, about the size of
a football pitch, but it hasn’t yet revealed much about new products.
It will be basing its displays on the themes of partnership, innovation
and workflow and will also present these in its ProfitAccelerator theatre.
The main stand will arrange four application zones around
a central hub: offset and digital integration, print-ondemand, book printing
and profit through personalisation. These will show logical workflows
taking in Xerox’s own production system plus some third party partner
products.
Some 70 Xerox units will be demonstrated, taking in everything
from the Nuvera and DocuTech mono and DocuColor colour printers up to
the high end iGen3 production press. They’ll be driven by the Xerox
FreeFlow workflow system which can now talk to third party print workflows
such as Heidelberg Prinect.
One of the partners will be Dutch company Venspro, which
will demonstrate its Greetz on-line personalised greeting card ordering
system, with cards printed digitally on a Xerox iGen3. The MyPhotoFun
digital photo album printing service will also be featured, also based
on iGen3s.
Winners of the 2006 Printing Innovations with Xerox (PIXI)
awards will be announced in the theatre on the stand.
