First solar-power lit billboards hit the street

Clear Channel UK has used the industry's first LED trough lighting system to be entirely solar powered, to illuminate two advertising billboards in Birmingham. The Ecolux Solar, jointly developed by Zeta Specialist Lighting and Portland Lighting was designed specifically to provide a solar powered LED lighting solution for outdoor signage where mains-fed power isn’t an option.

Ecolux Solar incorporates PV solar panels that power long-life batteries. Zeta’s patented Energy Management System (EMS) releases the stored energy, uses it to power the high intensity LED trough light and illuminate the billboard.

Portland Lighting’s MD Dave Harrison said: “We expect to see a wide adoption of this robust, durable and virtually maintenance-free sign illumination solution.”

A spokesperson for Clear Channel UK added: “We are extremely proud of the introduction of our first solar-powered billboard in Birmingham, which represents the latest in our commitment to combining the latest Out of Home technologies with our responsibility to the environment, allowing us to create innovative products that promote sustainable development and offer dynamic advertising opportunities.”
